It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Margaret Anne Thompson, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, who left this world peacefully on October 12, 2023, at the age of 68.

Margaret was born on March 15, 1955, in Springfield, Illinois, to the late John and Helen Lawson. She was the eldest of three siblings and took great pride in her role as a big sister, always looking out for her brothers, David and Michael. After graduating from Springfield High School, she attended the University of Illinois, where she earned a degree in Education, fulfilling her dream of becoming a teacher.

In 1978, Margaret married her college sweetheart, Mark Thompson, and together they built a beautiful life filled with love and adventure. They welcomed two daughters, Emily and Sarah, who became the center of Margaret’s world. As a mother, she was nurturing, supportive, and always encouraged her daughters to pursue their dreams. Margaret attended every soccer game, piano recital, and school play, cheering them on with an enthusiasm that could light up any room.

Her warmth and kindness extended beyond her immediate family. Margaret was a dedicated member of the community, volunteering her time at local charities and schools. She was known for her delicious home-cooked meals, her passion for gardening, and her unwavering belief in the power of education. She inspired many as a teacher in the Springfield School District for over 30 years, touching the lives of countless students and colleagues.

Margaret was also the proud grandmother of four beautiful grandchildren, who brought her immense joy. She loved hosting family gatherings and creating cherished memories that will live on in the hearts of her children and grandchildren.

Margaret is survived by her loving husband of 45 years, Mark Thompson; her daughters, Emily and her husband Tom Harris, and Sarah and her husband Jack Turner; and her beloved grandchildren, Lily, Jake, Anna, and Ben. She is also survived by her brothers, David Lawson and Michael Lawson, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and friends who adored her.

A celebration of Margaret’s life will be held on Saturday, October 21, 2023, at 2:00 PM at the Springfield Community Center. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Margaret Thompson Education Fund, which aims to support local students in their pursuit of higher education.

Margaret’s spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those she loved. She was a beacon of love and light, and she will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her.
