Obituary for John Andrew Smith

July 15, 1950 – October 10, 2023

It is with profound sadness that the Smith family announces the passing of John Andrew Smith, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, who left this world peacefully on October 10, 2023, at the age of 73.

John was born on July 15, 1950, in Springfield, Illinois, to Robert and Clara Smith. He was the youngest of five siblings and grew up in a loving household that instilled in him the values of hard work, kindness, and dedication. In 1972, John graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in engineering, embarking on a successful career that spanned over four decades.

In 1975, John married his high school sweetheart, Mary Johnson. Together, they built a beautiful life, raising three wonderful children: Sarah, Mike, and Emily. John was an extraordinary father, always juggling his demanding job while making time for family activities, coaching little league, and attending every recital and game. No accomplishment was too small to celebrate; his unwavering support was felt by all of his children.

John was an avid outdoorsman. Many summers were spent camping, fishing, and hiking with his family, creating memories that will be cherished forever. He took pride in teaching his children the importance of nature, whether it was through fishing trips at the lake or family hikes through the local woods.

He is remembered not just as a dedicated father, but also as a doting grandfather to his five grandchildren: Lucas, Ava, Emma, Jackson, and Mia. His face would light up at the sight of them, and he cherished every moment spent playing games, telling stories, or simply enjoying each other’s company.

John was also known for his generous spirit and sense of humor. He touched the lives of many with his kindness and compassion, always ready to lend a helping hand or offer words of encouragement. Friends and family alike will remember him for his infectious laughter and the warmth he brought into every room.

John is survived by his loving wife, Mary; his three children and their spouses, Sarah (David), Mike (Rachel), and Emily (Kevin); and his adoring grandchildren, as well as his four siblings. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Tom.

A memorial service will be held on October 15, 2023, at 2:00 PM at St. John’s Church, located at 123 Main Street, Springfield. Family and friends are invited to share their memories and celebrate the life of a truly remarkable man.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in his memory to the National Wildlife Federation, reflecting John’s love for nature and the great outdoors.

Rest in peace, John. Your love and legacy will forever remain in our hearts.
