John Michael Thompson, a devoted husband, loving father, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on October 10, 2023, at the age of 68. He was surrounded by his family, who were the center of his world and who held his hand as he took his final breath.

Born on April 5, 1955, in Springfield, Illinois, John was the second of four children in a tight-knit family. He graduated from Springfield High School and went on to earn a degree in Business Administration from the University of Illinois. John’s unwavering work ethic and deep sense of responsibility led him to a successful career in finance, where he was known for his integrity and wisdom.

John was a dedicated father who always made time for his children. He was their biggest supporter, whether cheering them on from the sidelines at sporting events or sharing life lessons around the dinner table. His children, Sarah and Michael, will forever cherish the memories of their father teaching them to ride bikes, camping under the stars, and instilling in them the importance of kindness and hard work.

An avid outdoorsman, John loved spending weekends in nature, whether hiking in the mountains, fishing by the lake, or simply enjoying a good book in his backyard. He also had a passion for cooking, often experimenting with new recipes and hosting family gatherings with his signature barbecues.

John is survived by his beloved wife of 42 years, Mary Ann, his daughter Sarah (Tom), his son Michael (Lisa), and his grandchildren, Emma and Ethan, who brought immense joy to his life. He is also mourned by his siblings, Mark, Linda, and Karen, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends who regarded him as a father figure.

A celebration of John’s life will be held on October 15, 2023, at St. Paul’s Community Church, with visitation beginning at 10 AM followed by a memorial service at 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the local food bank, a cause close to John’s heart.
