Obituary for John "Johnny" Matthews
It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of our dear friend, John "Johnny" Matthews, who left us unexpectedly on October 15, 2023, at the age of 42. Born on March 3, 1981, in Maplewood, Johnny brought joy and laughter to everyone he met throughout his remarkable journey.
A graduate of Maplewood High School and a proud member of the local community, Johnny was known for his infectious smile and kind-hearted nature. His passion for life shone through in everything he did. Whether he was strumming his guitar at local open mic nights or lending a hand to a neighbor in need, Johnny embodied the essence of friendship and generosity.
Johnny had an extraordinary ability to make everyone feel special and loved. His door was always open, and his home was a haven for friends and family, where laughter and warmth prevailed. He had a unique talent for storytelling, often captivating his audience with tales of adventure, kindness, and the simple joys of life.
In addition to his vibrant spirit, Johnny was a dedicated volunteer, giving his time to various charities, especially those focused on mental health awareness, a cause close to his heart. His commitment to helping others inspired many and left a lasting mark on the community.
Johnny is survived by his loving partner, Sara; his devoted parents, Mark and Linda Matthews; his sister, Emily; and countless friends whose lives he touched in meaningful ways. He was preceded in death by his beloved dog, Max, who was his faithful companion for many years.
A celebration of Johnny’s life will be held on Saturday, October 21, 2023, at the Maplewood Community Center from 2 PM to 5 PM. We invite everyone who knew him to join us in sharing stories and memories, in true Johnny fashion—filled with laughter and love.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Maplewood Mental Health Foundation, to honor Johnny's legacy of compassion and friendship.
Rest in peace, dear friend. Your spirit will live on in our hearts, and your laughter will echo through our memories forever.
