Obituary for John Edward Smith

June 15, 1945 - October 10, 2023

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of John Edward Smith, 78, on October 10, 2023. John was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, whose warmth and kindness touched the lives of many.

Born on June 15, 1945, in Springfield, John grew up in a close-knit community where he developed his lifelong passion for gardening and woodworking. He graduated from Springfield High School and went on to serve in the United States Army, where he learned the values of discipline, dedication, and service.

In 1970, John married the love of his life, Mary Lynn Johnson. Together, they built a family rooted in love and respect. John was a devoted father to three children: Michael, Sarah, and David, who will forever cherish his lessons of hard work and integrity. He is also survived by his treasured grandchildren, Emily, Noah, and Olivia, who brought him endless joy and pride.

John's professional journey included a successful career as a carpenter, where his craftsmanship was renowned in the community. He took great pride in building not just homes, but also lasting relationships with his clients and neighbors.

Outside of work, John enjoyed spending time outdoors, whether it was tending to his garden, fishing at the local lake, or hiking the beautiful trails in the area. He was known for his delicious barbeque and loved sharing meals with family and friends.

John was a devoted member of St. Mary’s Church, where he volunteered his time and skills. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, guiding him through both joyous moments and challenges.

John is preceded in death by his beloved dog, Max, who was his constant companion. A memorial service to celebrate John’s life will be held on Saturday, October 14, at 2 PM at St. Mary’s Church, followed by a reception in the parish hall. All who knew John are welcome to attend and share their memories.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in John's name to the Springfield Community Food Bank, an organization he supported throughout his life.

John's legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be dearly missed but never forgotten.
