Born on April 12, 1969, in Springfield, Illinois, John was the son of Mary and Charles Thompson and was a proud graduate of Springfield High School, where he first ignited his passion for sports and leadership.
John spent over 30 years working as an electrical engineer, a career he cherished and poured his heart into. He was known for his unwavering determination, innovative spirit, and an infectious laugh that could brighten any room. His colleagues admired him not only for his expertise but also for his commitment to mentoring young professionals who sought to follow in his footsteps.
In 1993, John married the love of his life, Sarah Mitchell. Together, they built a beautiful life filled with love, laughter, and adventure. John was a devoted husband who cherished every moment with Sarah, supporting her dreams and aspirations as fiercely as he pursued his own. Their bond was a testament to true partnership, and they celebrated each other's victories with joy.
As a father, John's pride knew no bounds. He is survived by his two children, Emily, 20, and Jacob, 17, who were the apples of his eye. John hosted countless soccer games, science fairs, and family vacations, always encouraging his children to dream big and work hard. He instilled in them the values of kindness, integrity, and perseverance, ensuring that they carried forward his legacy of love and strength.

He is survived by his loving wife, Sarah; his children, Emily and Jacob; his mother, Mary Thompson; and his siblings, Robert (Linda) and Lisa (Mark). John was preceded in death by his father, Charles, whose memory will forever inspire him.
A celebration of John’s life will be held on Saturday, October 21, 2023, at 2 PM at the Springfield Community Center, with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society in John's honor, as he was an advocate for cancer research and support.
