It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of John Michael Thompson, cherished husband, father, and friend, who departed this life on October 20, 2023, at the age of 56. John was born on March 15, 1967, in Springfield, Illinois, to the late Robert and Elaine Thompson.

John was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Sarah, with whom he shared 30 wonderful years of marriage. Their love story began in college, where they met during a sociology class. From that day on, they became inseparable partners, supporting each other's dreams and aspirations. John was not just a husband but a confidant and a source of unwavering strength for Sarah, always encouraging her to chase her dreams.

In addition to his role as a loving husband, John was a wonderful father to their three children: Emma (28), Ryan (25), and Lily (17). He was proud of each of their accomplishments, often attending their events, cheering them on, and offering sage advice whenever needed. John believed in cultivating a family rich in love, laughter, and open communication, values he instilled in his children every day.

John dedicated over 30 years to his career as a civil engineer, where he was known for his innovative ideas and a strong work ethic. He made significant contributions to numerous infrastructure projects in the community, always striving to leave a positive impact. His colleagues admired him for his leadership and mentorship, often turning to him for guidance and support.

Outside of work, John enjoyed gardening, fishing, and spending weekends exploring nature with his family. He was an avid fan of the Chicago Bears and never missed a game, often hosting friends and family for watch parties filled with spirited debate and delicious food.

John is survived by his wife, Sarah; their children, Emma, Ryan, and Lily; his sister, Rebecca (Daniel) Albright; his brother, Michael Thompson; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A celebration of John's life will be held on October 27, 2023, at 2 PM at the Springfield Community Center, followed by a reception to share memories and stories of a life well-lived. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in John’s memory to the American Heart Association, a cause close to his heart.

John Michael Thompson will be deeply missed but lovingly remembered by all who knew him. His legacy of love and kindness will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
