It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mary Elizabeth Thompson, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, who departed from this life on October 15, 2023, at the age of 78. Mary was a shining example of faith, love, and kindness, leaving behind a legacy of compassion that touched the lives of everyone who knew her.
Born on March 12, 1945, in Greenville, South Carolina, Mary grew up in a close-knit family that instilled in her the values of hard work and devotion to God. From a young age, she exhibited an unwavering faith and an unshakeable commitment to living a life that honored her beliefs. Mary was a dedicated member of Grace United Methodist Church, where she volunteered her time in various capacities, from teaching Sunday school to organizing community outreach programs. Her faith was not only a part of her life but also a guiding light for others.
Mary's greatest joy was her family. She married the love of her life, John Thompson, in 1967, and together they raised three wonderful children: Sarah, Michael, and Jennifer. Mary was the epitome of a devoted mother, always encouraging her children to pursue their dreams while instilling in them the importance of love, integrity, and faith. Her warm hugs, words of wisdom, and unwavering support provided a nurturing environment that will forever be cherished by her children and grandchildren.
In addition to her role as a mother, Mary was also a compassionate friend who was always ready to lend a helping hand. Her generosity knew no bounds, whether it was providing meals for families in need or offering a listening ear to someone going through tough times. Mary had a unique ability to see the good in everyone, and her gentle spirit helped to heal many wounded hearts in her community.
Mary is survived by her three children and their spouses, seven grandchildren, and her dear sister, Patricia. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John, who passed away in 2015, and her parents, Robert and Grace Morgan.
The family will hold a memorial service to honor Mary’s life on October 22, 2023, at Grace United Methodist Church, where she devoted so many years of service and love. Friends and family are invited to share their memories and celebrate the beautiful life of this godly woman who lived her faith every day, inspiring all around her.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Grace United Methodist Church outreach program, which was close to Mary’s heart. Her spirit will forever live on through the countless lives she touched with her kindness and unwavering faith. Mary Elizabeth Thompson may be gone from our sight, but she will never be forgotten.
