Obituary for father from daughter
Obituary for James Edward Thompson
It is with a heavy heart that I, Sarah Thompson, announce the passing of my beloved father, James Edward Thompson, on October 15, 2023, at the age of 67. He left this world peacefully, surrounded by family, after a brave battle with cancer.
Born on May 3, 1956, in Springfield, Illinois, Dad was the youngest of four children. He was raised in a loving household that instilled in him the values of hard work, kindness, and dedication to family. After graduating from Springfield High School, he pursued a degree in engineering from the University of Illinois, where he met my mother, Linda. They married in 1980, and together they built a life filled with laughter, love, and warmth.
Dad dedicated over 30 years to his career as a civil engineer, and his contributions can be seen in many of the bridges and roads that support our community today. He was not just a talented engineer; he was also a mentor to many young professionals in his field, always willing to share his knowledge and lend a helping hand.
To me, he was more than an esteemed engineer; he was my hero. He was always there to support my dreams, whether it was cheering me on during my volleyball games or listening to my hopes and fears as I navigated life. His unwavering belief in my potential taught me to pursue my passions fiercely. Dad had a special gift for making everyone feel important, and his warmth and wisdom touched countless lives.
James is survived by his wife, Linda Thompson; his daughter, Sarah Thompson; and his three grandchildren, Emma, Lucas, and Mia, who he adored with all his heart. He also leaves behind his beloved siblings, Mary, Robert, and Joseph, along with a host of nieces, nephews, and cherished friends.
A service celebrating his life will be held on October 20, 2023, at 1:00 PM at the Springfield Community Church, followed by a reception at the family home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society, an organization that gave us invaluable support during his illness.
Dad, I will forever cherish the memories we made together, from camping trips to late-night talks. You have left an indelible mark on my heart, and I promise to carry your love and lessons with me always. Thank you for being the best father anyone could ask for. I love you more than words can express.
