Born on March 4, 1951, in Springfield, Emily was the youngest of four siblings. She graduated from Springfield High School and went on to pursue her passion for education at the University of Illinois, earning her degree in Elementary Education. For over 30 years, Emily dedicated her life to teaching, nurturing the hearts and minds of countless children in her community. Her passion for education extended beyond the classroom, as she was actively involved in various local educational initiatives and advocacy programs.
Emily was a remarkable mother to three children: Michael, Sarah, and David. She instilled in them the values of kindness, compassion, and resilience. Emily's home was always filled with laughter and warmth, where family gatherings were a regular occurrence, and her famous chocolate chip cookies were an undeniable centerpiece. She supported her children in every endeavor, from school plays to sports events, always cheering the loudest from the sidelines.
A highlight of her life was becoming a grandmother to her five grandchildren, whom she adored. Emily spent countless hours playing games, reading stories, and sharing her wisdom with each of them. Her captivating tales and generous hugs will be deeply missed by those who were fortunate enough to know her.
Emily was known for her vibrant spirit, quick wit, and caring heart. She was an avid gardener, often sharing her beautiful blooms with neighbors and friends. She also loved spending time in nature, whether it was hiking in the local parks or enjoying peaceful afternoons fishing by the lake. Emily’s love for the arts shone through in her beautiful paintings, many of which decorated her family home.
Emily is survived by her three children, Michael (Jessica) Thompson, Sarah (Tom) Mitchell, and David Thompson; her five beloved grandchildren, Lily, Ethan, Mia, Jack, and Alex; and her brothers, Robert and William. She is preceded in death by her parents, George and Mary Jenkins, and her sister, Susan.
A celebration of Emily's life will be held on October 22, 2023, at 2 PM at St. Andrew’s Church, with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her honor to the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity, an organization she passionately supported throughout her life.
Emily’s legacy of love, compassion, and strength will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew her. She will be dearly missed but never forgotten. Rest in peace, dear mother, grandmother, and friend.
