Obituary of James Harold Thompson
July 15, 1945 - October 5, 2023
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of James Harold Thompson, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, who left us peacefully on October 5, 2023, at the age of 78. He was surrounded by his loving family in his home in Springfield, Illinois.
Born on July 15, 1945, in Little Rock, Arkansas, James was the youngest of three children. He was known for his warm smile, infectious laughter, and an unyielding spirit. After graduating high school, he proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, where he made lifelong friendships and learned the significance of loyalty and dedication.
James married his childhood sweetheart, Mary Ellen Mitchell, in 1970. Together, they raised two wonderful children, Michael and Sarah. James was a devoted family man who cherished every moment with his children and six grandchildren. He imparted wisdom, kindness, and a love for life that will forever remain in their hearts.
Throughout his career, James worked as a skilled machinist and later owned a successful auto repair shop. He was known for his exceptional problem-solving skills and his ability to fix anything that came his way. Outside of work, James loved gardening, fishing, and cheering on his beloved Chicago Cubs. He was a longtime member of the Springfield Community Church, where he volunteered his time and talents.
James is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen Thompson; his children, Michael (Jessica) Thompson and Sarah (David) Greene; his six grandchildren: Emma, Noah, Chloe, Samuel, Lily, and Ava; and his siblings, Linda and Robert Thompson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Ruth Thompson.
A celebration of James's life will be held on Friday, October 13, 2023, at 11:00 AM at Springfield Community Church, with a visitation starting at 9:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society in James's memory.
James will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his legacy of love, laughter, and hard work will continue to inspire those he touched throughout his life. He embodied the spirit of family, friendship, and community, and his stories will be shared for generations to come. Rest in peace, dear husband, father, and friend. You have left a void in our lives that can never be filled.
