Obituary for Mary Elizabeth Thompson

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Mary Elizabeth Thompson, age 76, who left this world peacefully on October 5, 2023, surrounded by her loving family. Mary was born on April 18, 1947, in Springfield, Illinois, to the late John and Margaret Johnson.

Mary dedicated her life to her family and community. She was a nurturing mother, a devoted grandmother, and a beloved friend. Widowed in 2010, Mary found strength in her children, Jane and Michael, and her five grandchildren, who brought her immense joy and purpose.

Mary was an active member of the Springfield Community Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher and was part of the church choir for over 30 years. Her passion for music brought happiness to everyone who knew her.

In addition to her dedicated service to her church, Mary was known for her love of gardening. Her vibrant flower beds became a cherished gathering place for family and friends, a testament to her nurturing spirit and her love for all things beautiful.

Mary is preceded in death by her husband, Robert Thompson, and her sister, Patricia Johnson. She is survived by her daughter, Jane Thompson of Springfield; her son, Michael Thompson and his wife Linda of Chicago; and her five grandchildren, Emma, Lucas, Sarah, Neal, and Mia.

A celebration of Mary’s life will be held on October 12, 2023, at 2:00 PM at the Springfield Community Church, followed by a reception at the church hall. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to the Springfield Community Church Music Fund or the local food bank in her memory.

Mary’s warmth and kindness will be profoundly missed, but her legacy of love and community service will continue to inspire all who knew her. May she rest in peace.
