In Loving Memory of Mary Elizabeth Johnson
Born: April 12, 1945 - Passed: October 20, 2023

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Mary Elizabeth Johnson, who left us peacefully at the age of 78. Mary was born in Springfield, Illinois, to the late Robert and Margaret Thompson. She was a devoted mother, cherished friend, and a passionate advocate for her community.

Mary dedicated her life to raising her three children: Susan, David, and Karen. Her love knew no bounds, and she imparted kindness, wisdom, and laughter into every aspect of their lives. Mary’s strength and resilience served as a guiding light for her family, teaching them the values of compassion and hard work.

A graduate of Illinois State University, Mary enjoyed a fulfilling career as an elementary school teacher, where she inspired countless young minds for over 30 years. Her creativity and enthusiasm had a lasting impact on her students, some of whom came to visit her long after they had graduated.

Mary was known for her love of gardening, cooking, and her passion for reading. She enjoyed hosting family gatherings and was famous for her homemade pies, which brought everyone together around the dinner table. She found joy in simple pleasures and taught her children the importance of appreciating life’s little moments.

Mary is survived by her three children, Susan (Mike) Carver, David (Linda) Johnson, and Karen (James) Miller, along with seven grandchildren who adored her and will forever carry her legacy in their hearts. She is also survived by her sister, Patricia (Tom) Smith, and numerous nieces and nephews who were dear to her.

A celebration of Mary’s life will be held on Saturday, October 28, 2023, at 2:00 PM at Elmwood Community Church, 123 Main St, Springfield, IL. Friends and family are invited to share their memories and stories of Mary.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Mary’s name to the Springfield Public Library Foundation, an organization she passionately supported.

Mary Elizabeth Johnson’s love and light will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. She will be deeply missed but forever remembered for her unwavering spirit and the joy she brought into our lives. Rest in peace, dear mother.
