It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Thomas Smith, beloved father, grandfather, and friend. John, aged 71, of Springfield, passed away peacefully at his home after a courageous battle with illness.

Born on April 12, 1952, in Elmwood, Missouri, John was the eldest of three siblings. He graduated from Elmwood High School and went on to serve in the United States Army, where he developed a deep love for his country. After returning home, he pursued a career in construction, becoming a skilled carpenter and leaving behind a legacy of beautifully crafted homes in his community.

John was a devoted father to his two children, Emily and Michael. He dedicated his life to their happiness and success, often working long hours to provide for them. He was their biggest cheerleader at every school event, and his gentle guidance helped shape them into the incredible adults they are today. John held a special bond with his grandchildren, sharing countless adventures and stories that will forever remain in their hearts.

A passionate outdoorsman, John loved fishing, camping, and spending time in nature. He was known for his quick wit and ability to make everyone around him laugh. His friends often described him as someone who could light up a room with his smile and infectious spirit.

John is survived by his children, Emily (Jason) Reynolds and Michael (Rebecca) Smith; his cherished grandchildren, Sarah, Ella, and Jacob; his siblings, Mary (Joe) Thompson and Richard Smith; and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Margaret Smith.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 28, 2023, at 2:00 PM at the Springfield Community Center, followed by a celebration of life gathering where family and friends can share their favorite memories of John.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Springfield Veterans Association in John’s honor, as he was passionate about supporting veterans and their families.

Though he will be dearly missed, John's spirit will live on through the love and memories he created with those he touched. Rest in peace, dear Dad.
