Obituary for James Edward Thompson
March 15, 1950 - October 1, 2023
It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of James Edward Thompson, a beloved father, devoted husband, and cherished friend to many. James left this world peacefully at his home in Springfield, surrounded by his loving family, on October 1, 2023, at the age of 73.
James was born on March 15, 1950, in Springfield, the son of Robert and Margaret Thompson. After graduating from Springfield High School, he went on to pursue a degree in Business Administration from the University of Illinois. Upon graduating, he began a successful career in finance, eventually establishing his own firm that has served the community for over 30 years.
James was a proud father, and he found his greatest joy in his three children, Emily, Jacob, and Sarah. He often said, “A father’s love is the greatest gift a child can ever receive.” This sentiment was evident in the tireless support he offered his children, whether it was cheering from the sidelines at soccer games, helping with science projects, or simply being there to lend an ear.
In addition to being a devoted dad, James had a passion for the outdoors. He was an avid fisherman and loved to take his kids on camping trips, where he would often remind them, “Time spent in nature is time well spent.” Memories of these adventures will forever remain in the hearts of his children.
James was also a man of faith. A longtime member of St. Mary’s Church, he volunteered countless hours supporting community outreach programs, believing that “We rise by lifting others.” His kindness and generosity touched the lives of many, and he was known for his infectious laughter and warm smile.
James is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Linda; his three children, Emily (Michael), Jacob (Sarah), and Sarah (Tom); as well as five grandchildren who adored their “Papa.” He is also survived by his sister, Karen, and many extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, October 5, 2023, from 4 PM to 8 PM at the Springfield Funeral Home. A celebration of life service will be held on Friday, October 6, 2023, at 11 AM at St. Mary’s Church, followed by a reception at the church hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in James’s memory to the Springfield Children’s Hospital, ensuring his legacy of love and support continues for generations to come.
James Edward Thompson will be remembered as a pillar of strength, a source of wisdom, and a father whose love will echo in the hearts of his children forever. As he would say, “Family is everything, and love is the thread that binds us together.” Rest in peace, dear father. Your impact will never be forgotten.
