Obituary for Grace Elizabeth Harper

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Grace Elizabeth Harper, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, who left us peacefully on October 12, 2023, at the age of 76. Born on June 3, 1947, in Springfield, Illinois, Grace touched the lives of everyone she met with her boundless kindness, unwavering strength, and infectious laughter.

Grace dedicated her life to her family and community. As a devoted mother to three children—Emily, James, and Sarah—she taught them the value of compassion, the importance of kindness, and the strength of unity. Her children remember her as a guiding light, always encouraging them to chase their dreams and instilling in them the courage to face life’s challenges with grace and dignity.

Grace’s nurturing spirit extended beyond her immediate family; she embraced her role as a grandmother with enthusiasm, showering her six grandchildren—Lily, Noah, Mia, Ethan, Ava, and Oliver—with love and wisdom. Whether it was teaching them how to bake her famous chocolate chip cookies or reading bedtime stories, her time spent with them was filled with joy and warmth, creating cherished memories that will be treasured forever.

In addition to her family, Grace was deeply involved in her community. She volunteered at the local food bank and served as a member of the PTA, always advocating for the betterment of children’s education. Her selflessness and dedication inspired those around her to give back, leaving a lasting impact on her neighborhood and beyond.

Grace had a passion for gardening and found solace in nurturing her beautiful flowers and plants, often sharing the bounty of her greenhouse with friends and family. Her garden became a haven, a perfect reflection of her vibrant spirit, where love and beauty bloomed side by side.

She is survived by her cherished children, Emily (Robert) Thompson, James (Karen) Harper, and Sarah Harper; her beloved grandchildren; and her dear sister, Margaret Wilkins. Grace is preceded in death by her loving husband, Charles Harper, who was her partner in life for over 50 years.

A celebration of Grace’s life will take place on October 20, 2023, at St. Mary’s Church in Springfield, where friends and family are invited to share their memories and stories. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Springfield Community Food Bank, continuing Grace’s legacy of giving.

Grace Elizabeth Harper’s spirit will forever linger in the hearts of those she touched. Her laughter, love, and light will be deeply missed but never forgotten. As she often said, “Love is the greatest gift we can give one another,” and she surely gave enough love to last a lifetime.
