Obituary for John Edward Thompson
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of John Edward Thompson, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, who departed from this life on October 15, 2023, at the age of 72. John was born on March 5, 1951, in Springfield, Illinois, to the late Edward and Margaret Thompson. He devoted his life to his family and his faith, leaving an indelible mark on everyone he met.
John was a proud member of the First Baptist Church of Springfield, where he served as a deacon and participated in numerous community outreach programs. Known for his unwavering faith and kindness, John often reminded his family and friends that “faith can move mountains,” and he lived this belief daily. His life was a testament to his deep love for Jesus Christ, and he instilled the same values in his children, encouraging them to live with integrity, compassion, and love.
A devoted family man, John cherished every moment spent with his wife, Susan, whom he married on June 12, 1975. Together, they created a warm and loving home for their three children: Michael (Sara), Jessica (Ryan), and David (Emily). He was a proud grandfather to five beautiful grandchildren, whom he adored and cherished immensely: Emma, Noah, Sophie, Mia, and Lucas. His laughter, wisdom, and storytelling will be sorely missed during family gatherings.
In addition to his family, John had a passion for gardening and fishing. Many afternoons were spent in his backyard creating a vibrant haven of flowers and vegetables, a reflection of his nurturing spirit. He often stated that his happiest memories were made by the lake, fishing with his children and teaching them the values of patience and perseverance.
John is survived by his loving wife, children, grandchildren, sister, and numerous extended family members and friends. He touched the lives of many with his gentle spirit, and his legacy of love and faith will continue to inspire those who knew him.
A celebration of John’s life will be held on October 22, 2023, at 2:00 PM at the First Baptist Church of Springfield, with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the church’s community outreach program, honoring John’s life of service.
As we say goodbye to our beloved father and husband, we find comfort in knowing he is at peace, watching over us, and rejoicing in the presence of the Lord he loved so dearly. “Well done, good and faithful servant.” (Matthew 25:23)
