Obituary for John Michael Smith

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of John Michael Smith, a devoted husband, loving father, and cherished friend, who left this world to be with his Lord and Savior on September 15, 2023, at the age of 67.

Born on October 1, 1955, in Springfield, Illinois, John was the third of four children in the Smith family. He grew up in a loving Christian home, where he learned the values of faith, compassion, and service to others. John graduated from Springfield High School and went on to earn a degree in Business Administration from the University of Illinois.

In 1980, John married the love of his life, Mary Ann (née Johnson). Together they raised three beloved children: Jennifer, Michael, and Elizabeth. As a family, they were deeply involved in their local church, where John served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher, sharing his faith and wisdom with others in their community.

John was known for his kind heart, infectious smile, and willingness to lend a helping hand. He worked for over 30 years as a sales manager in the automotive industry, always prioritizing integrity and honesty in his work. He found joy in mentoring young colleagues, instilling in them the same values he held dear.

John's faith was central to his life; he was a member of Grace Community Church, where he found inspiration and fellowship. He took part in mission trips, supporting various charitable efforts that provided assistance to those in need both locally and abroad.

John is survived by his loving wife, Mary Ann Smith; his children, Jennifer (Ryan) Brooks, Michael (Sarah) Smith, and Elizabeth Smith; his cherished grandchildren, Noah, Ella, and Grace; and his siblings, Susan, Robert, and Linda. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Martha Smith.

A celebration of John's life will be held on Saturday, September 23, 2023, at Grace Community Church, 1234 Faith Lane, Springfield. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM, followed by a service at 11:00 AM. A reception will follow where family and friends can gather to share memories and stories of John's life and impact.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in John's memory to the Grace Community Church Building Fund or the local food pantry, where he spent many hours volunteering.

John Michael Smith will be deeply missed but will forever be remembered for his unwavering faith, love for his family, and commitment to serving others. He has left a legacy of love that will continue to inspire those who knew him.
