Obituary for Mary Elizabeth Thompson
In loving memory of Mary Elizabeth Thompson, a cherished mother, devoted grandmother, and beloved friend, who passed away peacefully at her home on October 15, 2023, at the age of 72. Mary was born on March 22, 1951, in Springfield, Illinois, to the late James and Margaret Carter. She dedicated her life to her family and community, always radiating warmth and compassion.
Mary was a remarkable mother to her three children, David, Sarah, and Jessica. Her love was a source of strength and inspiration, guiding them through life’s challenges and celebrating every achievement, no matter how small. She had an innate ability to make each of her children feel special, often showering them with affectionate notes and thoughtful gifts that reflected her deep understanding of their unique personalities.
As a grandmother, she was the heart and soul of her family. Her five grandchildren cherished the countless hours spent in her garden, where she taught them the beauty of nature and the importance of nurturing their dreams. Mary had a magical way of making every holiday unforgettable, filling her home with love, laughter, and the irresistible aroma of her famous homemade chocolate chip cookies.
Mary was not only a pillar in her family but also an integral part of her community. She volunteered at the local food bank and participated in various charitable events, believing deeply in the power of kindness. Her compassionate spirit touched many lives, and her legacy of generosity will continue to inspire those who knew her.
Mary had an infectious smile that could light up any room, and her laughter was a melody that lingers in the hearts of those who loved her. She embraced life fully, finding joy in the simple things—a cup of tea on a quiet afternoon, a stroll through the park, or a cozy night in, surrounded by her family.
She is survived by her loving children, David Thompson and his partner Laura, Sarah Johnson and her husband Tom, and Jessica Brown; her cherished grandchildren, Lily, Mia, Ethan, Noah, and Ava; and her beloved sister, Susan Carter. A celebration of Mary’s life will be held on Saturday, October 21, 2023, at 2 PM at the Springfield Community Center, with visitation starting at 1 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Springfield Food Bank in her honor, to continue her legacy of kindness and compassion.
